BOOKS

Throughout Butler and Tanner's 150 year history, books have formed the backbone of the company's output. For the first 135 years this was mainly illustrated black and white books but the last fifteen years has seen a transformation. Today the majority of books are produced in colour.

CASE STUDY
Jamie's Italy

One of Butler and Tanner's unique abilities is the speed in which it is able to manufacture books. With its huge capacity and exceptional automation, the factory can now produce to schedules that would have been considered impossible even five years ago. This provides publishers with the opportunity to exploit particular events or unexpected publishing success.

This was exactly the case with one of Penguin's books in 2005 - Jamie's Italy. An Initial Printing of 370,000 copies flew out of the shops as the accompanying channel 4 TV series became extremely popular. Penguin soon realised that they had a huge success on their hands and needed to get additional stock to the shops as quickly as possible.

Butler and Tanner produced reprint after reprint - many in just 5 days - assisting Penguin in quickly responding to the immediate demand. In total 1,140,000 copies were produced.
